Lydia Johnston
Artist's Statement
Lydia Johnston's "Meadow Series" is a collection of oil
paintings inspired by the gently rolling fields near her home. Johnston's
landscape paintings reflect the natural beauty of southern Vermont where she
has lived for the past twenty-six years. Much of her inspiration comes
from the passing seasons, and the fields and woods that surround her.
Johnston's work is impressionistic. Her goal is to capture
the mood of the moment, the sparkle of wildflowers in a meadow, the glow
of a late afternoon sunset. A sense of the place is created without
providing all the detail, drawing you back to continually find something
new.
"One of my favorite subjects is the meadows and
overgrown pastures on my road. Passing by them every day, be it during an
early morning run or a trip to town, I am drawn to their continually
changing conditions. The soft light of the early morning, the intense
glow of a late day sunset, the orange glow in the summer, the pink glow
of winter, these changes capture my attention. There is always something
new to see, whether it be the quickly changing cloud patterns of a stormy
sky or the clear blue of a summer's day, the soft colors of early spring,
the lushness of midsummer, or the last blooms at the end of the
season."
Her "Meadow Series" has grown out of her continual
fascination with this ever changing environment.
